The discovery record for Five Star Napkins: what is captured, what we settle on the call

Where we are

Darren returned both homework documents on 12 October: the revised Brand Kit, the completed entity pack, and a change summary for each. Between them they lock most of what we need to write for you. What is left sits in three places: the facts only Debra holds, one scope decision (wholesale), and the access and ways-of-working set-up we finish on the call.

~50%Of revenue is wholesale: scope call

What we will cover on the call

Tuesday 13 October, 60 minutes
  1. Confirm the locked facts, read aloud. The one-sentence description (and Debra's own version of it, as if to someone who has never heard of you), the Forbes wording, the review and host lines, the named-client rule, the linen rule, and the baseline numbers we are modelling on. Corrections are where the value is.
  2. Debra's list. The things only she can settle: founding year and first hotel, the GOTS certificate, the returns policy, the cleared client names from the wholesale deck, bios, margins, what not to promote.
  3. The wholesale decision. About half the revenue is wholesale and it runs outside Shopify. In scope for content now, later, or never? It changes the page plan.
  4. Access and tooling. The Shopify custom app (built together from inside your Shopify account), Merchant Center, the domain-level Search Console property, Klaviyo and Meta read access, and switching on Junip's review schema.
  5. Ways of working. Who signs off content and how fast, Debra as the default author, the voice-note StoryBank, Slack as the home for everything, and the Typeform.
  6. The 12-month picture and what we measure. Agree the fixed panel of prompts we track monthly and reconcile the two success definitions.
  7. What happens in the next two weeks, and what it asks of you. Baseline, schema, the collection clean-up, and the first three calibration pieces in Debra's voice. Expect a quiet few weeks on the surface while the foundations go in, and a little of your time each week for approvals and questions.
The entity question is answered. The entity pack asked which legal entities sit behind the brand. The public company register settles it: there is one corporation, Five Star Napkins Inc, not two companies. We walk the detail through on the call rather than printing it here. What is still needed is the US state of incorporation (the certificate of incorporation) and which entity holds the trademark and the GoDaddy domain account. Organization schema uses the Freehold address, as agreed.

The discovery record

Ten sections, pre-filled from the 8 September session, the two homework returns and our September research. Captured means it is on the record; Partial means a detail or two is still open; Ask on the call marks what we settle together on Tuesday. Client words are quoted in green.

1 · The business in your words Partial

Feeds → brand profile · entity layer · the About rewrite
The locked description
Five Star Napkins makes single-use 100% organic cotton cocktail and table napkins, boxed and printed with conversation-starting quotes, supplied to luxury hotels for over a decade and sold direct to hosts who want the same standard at home. Name always spelled out ("Five Star Napkins", "five-star"), never the numeral 5. Both taglines stay: "Luxury Cotton Cocktail Napkins" and "The napkin that elevates every occasion". Published address: 1 Industrial Court, Suite 8, Freehold, NJ 07728.
The origin story, from Debra's recorded interview (8 Oct)
Twelve months developing the base textile and the drill weave, with factory inspections across several textile centres, before printing anything. In 2020 the hotel, casino, cruise and private aviation business stopped. Debra put the quotes everyone was sharing onto napkins to cheer up a friend whose husband was on a ventilator; "Quarantine Quotes" went viral on Amazon, and fan mail asking "what else can you do?" built the consumer range. "A lot of the inspiration comes from our fan base." Debra on camera: "a little over 10 years old now."
To settle with Debra
The founding year (a third-party listing says Forbes Travel Guide official brand "since 2013", unverified), the first hotel or group, and whether the Houston show and the Palm Beach trunk show can be told publicly. Whether there were co-founders. Whether the short 160-character description we drafted is approved, and whether the phone number goes on the site.

2 · People and bylines Partial

Feeds → author persona · E-E-A-T · the StoryBank
Who does what
Debra MacKinnon, Founder and CEO: the default author and the product expert. Darren: "Everything should just come through Debra. It needs to come from her voice." Darren Nguyen, Marketing Director: owner of the Brand Kit on your side, happy to be named. Keith: operations and inventory, also contributes to marketing and strategy. Richard Griffiths, Brand Director. Allen Uhler, Business Development Director. Thomas Russomano, Warehouse Manager. Max Broadhurst is no longer with the company; the wholesale deck still lists Mark Gaito, who is no longer on the team list.
The StoryBank
Debra's 8 October founder interview is exactly the raw material the content engine runs on. We would like the recording or transcript, and we will send Debra a short question list she can answer as voice notes while driving: the first hotel, the weave, the factory visits, the Houston show, the Palm Beach trunk show, what a five-star bar manager asks for.
To settle on the call
One-line bios for Debra and Darren. Whether Keith, Richard, Allen and Thomas may be named publicly. LinkedIn URLs and approved headshots, and any photos not to use.

3 · Money map and product priorities Partial

Feeds → product priorities · page plan · the wholesale decision
The baseline we are modelling on (Shopify, 12 months to 12 Aug 2026)
Total sales US$1,839,291 (gross $1,881,425, net $1,688,559) · 23,734 orders · average order $77.50 · returning customer rate 12.7% · total sales down 3% on the prior year. Organic search is $132,000 of that, of which about $91,000 is people searching your name and only $32,000 is non-branded, the slice we grow. Does that look right to you for the last twelve months?
Where the money comes from (Darren's estimate, not audited)
Wholesale about 50%, Shopify direct about 25%, Amazon about 25%. Wholesale runs in a separate QuickBooks, outside Shopify. Our model and our work are on the Shopify store only. Paid traffic (Meta and the ChatGPT ads pilot) lands on the homepage.
What sells, from Shopify net sales over the last 12 months
Drinking Quotes First Edition $210k · Plain Cocktail Napkins (all colours) $141k · 70th Birthday $121k · Love Quotes $118k · 60th Birthday $99k · Drinking Quotes Second Edition $62k · Champagne $62k · Tennis Legends $49k. Darren: "the money is usually Drinking Quotes, plain cocktail napkins and Birthday." Evergreen core: Drinking Quotes, plain cocktail, Birthday, Tennis, Golf, Love. Focus areas: best sellers, milestone birthdays from the 50th to the 90th, anniversaries, sports and archetypes. No "turning 30" page.
The range, verified in Shopify Admin
Core range 100% organic cotton at 200 GSM, drill weave; a linen tier at 65% linen, 35% cotton, 180 GSM; embroidered hemstitch linen sets. UPCs populated (prefix 810022); SKU convention decoded (format, colour, weave and GSM, set, count, retail or case). Brand field "Five Star Napkins" everywhere. Locked colour claim: "28 colours and 5 patterns". "2 for $50" and "5th pack free" were reported as not current, and the ambassador programme runs through Trybe, off the site.
To settle on the call
The wholesale decision: with half the revenue in wholesale and the trade hub already a de-duplication job on the site, is wholesale and custom content in scope now, in month four, or not in this six months? (Debra's call.) Then: best margins, anything not to promote, whether the wholesale collections should be findable in search at all, whether any product is paper or air-laid, the thread count and print method, the Red Vichy pack count, and what role Amazon plays in how a Google or ChatGPT shopper should be sent to buy.

4 · The opportunity and the 12-month picture Partial

Feeds → strategy · measures of success · the prompt panel
The numbers we are working from
Across the US, UK, Canada and Australia the category runs to about 2.24 million non-branded searches a year, roughly 448,700 winnable clicks, of which the store takes 1.5% today. The mid case on the Strategy tab is about 18% share: around $161,600 a year in new first-order revenue and $230,500 lifetime. The AI-search score is 27 out of 100, and zero structured data is the single gate on it.
Success, in your words
Darren: SEO and agentic search "working and ticking along consistently", with Five Star Napkins the number one result for "tabletop", "cocktail napkins" and "luxury napkins". Debra (8 Sep): reach the right buyer online in a way that scales profitably, with first-year and lifetime value that reflect "the handfuls of napkins" the right customer buys, rather than one pack. The phrases to own: "the cotton cocktail napkins five-star hotels use" and "the gold standard for luxury napkins, used by luxury establishments".
To settle on the call
"Tabletop" is a very wide word (plates, linen, décor, games). Do you mean the napkin and tabletop-accessory shopper, or the full tabletop category? We will agree the fixed panel of 20 to 30 buyer prompts we run monthly across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI, so month one has a baseline to measure against. And: what game are you not playing? (Our read: you will not out-rank Amazon for the word "napkins", and you do not need to.)

5 · Ideal customers Captured

Feeds → audience profile · search intent · content calibration
The buyer
Debra: "Our key demographic is 55-year-old women, mostly urban-based, mostly professional or married well... the person that buys our product is not concerned with the cost." Darren's persona deck agrees from 750+ reviews: 85 to 90% female, almost entirely US-based, mid-40s to 60s, Southern and Midwest concentration, almost no price objections. The five personas (Proud Host, Gift-Giver, Wit Lover, Quality Sceptic, Milestone Planner) and the three behaviour loops (gift becomes self-purchase, host becomes stocker, seen in the wild becomes a cold purchase) are in the Brand Kit as Darren wrote them.
The strategic shift, endorsed 12 Oct
Owned content targets the affluent 55+ host much more obviously than the site does today; paid social keeps testing broad, then tapers. What persuades is hospitality provenance and the material story, never price. Debra's test: Madonna, not Taylor Swift. Build next: the Quality Sceptic (expectation versus reality, the founder and hotel story) and the Milestone Planner (50th to 90th birthdays, anniversaries).
The number-one customer question
"Can I wash them?" The full answer, every time: single use, no washing, bleaching or ironing, biodegradable and recyclable, an unsoiled napkin can be reused. Never "washable", never "reusable" on its own.

6 · Competitors Partial

Feeds → positioning · the benchmark · comparison content
On the record
MyDrap is tracked internally as a competitor and never named publicly; the live "vs MyDrap" page comes down. The benchmark set we measure against stays: Napkins2go, Sophistiplate, napkins.com, SipHipHooray, Caspari and For Your Party, with mid-table the six-month target and Caspari and For Your Party the ceiling. Marketplaces (Amazon, Walmart, Etsy) are channels, not rivals. On AI answers, almost nobody owns the category: the brand appeared in 3 of 8 test prompts, and the citation layer is thin and winnable.
To settle on the call
Your five other comparison pages name Caspari, Simulinen, Duni, Ladelle and BioPak: are those who you actually lose sales to, who is missing, and which one is the positioning threat whose branding you admire? Do the remaining comparison pages stay (we would upgrade them with schema) or go? How do you feel about comparison content in general: named, unnamed, or photo-only? And anything we should know about MyDrap beyond "competitor, internal only", so we write around it correctly.

7 · Voice, tone and the never-say list Partial

Feeds → voice profile · global writing rules · the claims register
The voice
From the brand guidelines: "composed, considered, and quietly confident. We never raise our voice, the quality does that for us." Considered not casual, confident not boastful, warm not cold, specific not generic. Darren's balance: direct-response and social-proof signals stay on product pages; editorial content (blog, guides, About) keeps the composed luxury voice; the loud ad hooks belong to paid social. Humour is welcome inside the luxury positioning: "We don't mind a little bit of humor... We can still be fun." The benchmark pages to write towards are the About page and The Host's Guide.
The 20 writing rules, locked 12 Oct (the ones that bite)
Always cotton, never linen, never "feels like linen" (people hear "paper that feels like linen"). "100% organic cotton", not "GOTS-certified", until the certificate is in hand. Reviews only as "35,000 five-star reviews worldwide"; hosts only as "700,000+ hosts worldwide". Forbes only as "A Forbes Travel Guide official brand, trusted for over 10 years." Never a free-shipping threshold or offer specifics. Never price per napkin. Never the numeral 5. Never the manufacturing location or where the team is based. Never "27x more absorbent" or "40 colours" in new content. Never Tiffany, Augusta or the Masters, Skywalker Grill, Louis Vuitton, Hermès or Valentino.
To settle on the call
Anything you are not comfortable with even if true. Words, phrases or spellings you dislike. Style vetoes. The Meta ad archive and the best-performing email copy, exported, as the pre-approved claims library (what has already converted is the safest language we can reuse). And whether content may be built on the Donald Trump Jr. wedding coverage (Page Six, USA Today, the New York Post) or only linked to, given how that coverage was received.

8 · Trust, proof and provenance Partial

Feeds → proof points · schema · the citation layer
Verified and locked
Forbes Travel Guide lists Five Star Napkins on its Official Brands page as "The Official Cotton Cocktail Napkins of Forbes Travel Guide" (we checked the live page on 13 Oct). Its "learn more" link still points at the old signaturenapkins.com, which redirects to the current site, so it works but should be updated with FTG. Cleared names: the hotels on the website (Four Seasons, Rosewood, The Ritz-Carlton, Bemelmans Bar), MGM, Bellagio, Aria, Peninsula, the US Open. Press: six links on file (Page Six, USA Today, The Independent, the New York Post, Popdust, Valet). GOTS is held through the factory, so copy says "organic cotton" until the licence number and scope arrive. No Google Business Profile exists (Google Ads and Merchant Center are active).
To settle with Debra
The factory's GOTS licence number, scope, expiry and whether the linen tier is covered. Permission to use Amanda Frasier's FTG quote on the consumer site, and the year the FTG relationship started. What the 700,000+ hosts figure counts. Permission to quote named reviewers and use review photos. The Amazon rating and count. Awards, if any. Any research or test behind "biodegradable". The text names behind the wholesale deck's logo page, and whether any case study is possible.

9 · Content preferences and operations Ask on the call

Feeds → content types · sign-off · the calendar
What we already know
All eight content territories stay as drafted, led by quote and funny napkins, cotton and material education, and hosting advice. About 60 pieces cover the four winnable clusters, about 106 the full catalogue, around 150 across the six months including refreshes of the 18 existing posts. Debra on 8 Sep: "we want to get... all the back end tucked away before... we're in full stream shopping", so the holiday season sets the clock on the technical work.
To settle on the call
The biggest frustration with the website and online sales right now, in one sentence each from Debra and Darren, and who touches the site day to day (theme, products, content, apps). Who signs off a piece before it publishes, and the turnaround you can commit to (after calibration, review sits with you). What must never be rewritten (The Host's Guide? the About page? product copy?). Which content types you want more of, and which you hate. The dates that matter: Black Friday, the holiday peak, any launches or new quote sets, and the Shopify theme or site overhaul Debra mentioned. Whether the ChatGPT ads pilot is still running and where it lands.

10 · Access, measurement and ways of working Partial

Feeds → delivery set-up · the baseline · reporting

GA4 ✓ · Search Console ✓ (the non-www property holds the data; a domain-level property would be better) · Google Ads ✓ · Shopify admin ✓ (organisation level) · Slack collab channel ✓ (Debra is in; on the call we set the rest of the team up as guests in that one channel, which works whether or not you already use Slack).
Access still to set up
The Shopify custom app is the one that gates the technical work (bulk titles, descriptions, schema, redirects): it has to be created from inside your own Shopify account (a collaborator seat cannot do it), so we build it together on a ten-minute screen-share and you hand us the key. Merchant Center access (agreed 12 Oct, not yet granted). Junip: switch on its structured-data output so your 4.93-star ratings become AggregateRating markup engines can read, and confirm whether it also feeds reviews into Merchant Center. Klaviyo and Meta read access, so we can see what already converts. The onboarding Typeform is still outstanding.
To settle on the call
Which numbers you already watch and where (SEMrush, Shopify, Meta), how and how often you want to see progress (our default: this live report, a new tab each month, plus the Slack channel for anything in between), and whether Slack is the home for everything or email stays in play for Debra.

Site contradictions to settle

These are the places where the store disagrees with itself or with the 12 October answers. None is a big job; each one is the kind of inconsistency that makes an AI assistant hedge instead of recommending you. We settle the right answer on the call and fix the pages in the technical phase.
